An Education Forum: Innovation in Investing in China

Wednesday April 28, San Francisco

"Dynamic" doesn't do China justice in so many dimensions.  As investors and entrepreneurs alike have experienced over the past decade, the pace of change in what it takes to invest (or receive investment) in China can leave you both breathless and out-of-date in the blink of a trans-pacific flight.  From the beloved (and now perhaps dated) "Sina" structure to Equity JVs to RMB Funds and public/private funds, it almost makes one wish for a Sand Hill Road equivalent in China.  But is China ready to foster technology start-ups the same way that Silicon Valley does today?

The answer is 'no', according to Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, the most respected IT professional in China.  He has the credentials to back that up: former CEO of Google China, Founder of Microsoft Research Asia, GM at SGI, VP at Apple, youngest associate professor at Carnegie Mellon, and author of four best-selling books in China.  Kai-Fu left his post last fall at Google to start Innovation Works, a business creation platform to fill the gaps in seed-stage venture formation and venture capital to launch the next generation of Chinese Internet, mobile Internet and cloud services leaders. Melissa Ma, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Asia Alternatives, a pioneering fund-of-funds investor that has helped foster the VC and private equity industry in China, joins the discussion with her ground floor experience of what is arguably an innovation hotbed for funds.

Please join our moderator Lucas Chang, Morgan Lewis's Chief Beijing Representative, for a evening of insights into the dynamic investment environment in China and new models for success.
