The Organization
Korea Investment Corporation is a global investment management company established in July 2005 by the Korean government to manage part of the country's foreign exchange reserves and other public funds. KIC manages approximately USD $45 billion in assets for Bank of Korea and Ministry of Strategy and Finance (MOSF) across equity, fixed-income, private equity, real estate, hedge fund and other investment products. It will increase over USD $50 billion early next year.

Specific Responsibilities
The Chief Investment Officer takes the leadership role in managing the investment program under established policies and procedures and implementing decisions.
  • Lead and guide the following investment functions (not limited to the following):
  • Investment strategy, direct equity investment, direct fixed income investment, indirect investment, Alternative investment and strategic investment.
  • Recommend investment policy and asset allocation for approval by the Steering Committee;
  • Recommend investment strategies, portfolio structure and manager structure for each asset class and related benchmark and investment guidelines;
  • Ensure the best practice in conducting external manager searches, selection and monitoring
  • Ensure the investment activities and operations to be conducted in accordance with the best practice and in the best interest of the fund
  • Ensure monitoring global capital markets, global economy, new trend in asset management industry, conducting research and analyses on their impact on the fund and taking appropriate measures based on them.
  • Ensure the best functioning of each divisions through appropriate recruitment, direction, and supervision of investment staff

Qualifications & Experience
Possession of a qualification in Investment, Finance, Economics, or closely related fields and more than 10 years of professional, full-time supervisory or management experience in multiple asset class investment portfolio management and/or manager selection, monitoring and evaluation experience for a pension plan, endowment, or related financial institution.

Given the important responsibilities, preferred experience will include similar responsibilities at another public fund such as SWF, large pension or endowment plans where innovative investment strategies have been employed.

Leadership & Management Behavioral Competencies
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the principles and theories of fund investment and administration including knowledge of various asset classes, including private equity, real estate and hedge funds
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the principles and theories of investments as well as the legal and regulatory environment for investments
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational management skills needed to achieve effective and efficient operation;
  • Ability to oversee the performance of KIC staff, outside investment advisors and external investment managers with respect to the provision of services
  • Ability to assist in the monitoring of investment performance and the modification of investment guidelines, as appropriate;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with management, staff, and the public;
  • Ability to remain impartial, be tactful, and to exercise independent judgment and discretion;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • A strong leader with the ability to manage an investment team.
  • Self-starter with the ability to take new ideas from concept through implementation and dynamic and creative personality with the willingness to identify new and unique investment approaches.
