New York University
New York University was founded in 1831 and is recognized internationally for the caliber of its undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Total enrollment is approximately 43,000 students across 16 academic divisions, making NYU the largest private university in the U.S.

NYU is primarily located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood, utilizing over 15 million square feet of space around Washington Square. The University is in the midst of ambitious campaigns to globalize NYU’s educational offerings, strengthen its faculty, enhance the undergraduate experience, and extend the footprint of the University.

As of March 31, 2010, NYU’s Total Endowment value was $2.4 billion. The Endowment’s portfolio is diversified across multiple asset classes and strategies and includes a substantial number of alternative investments. At the same time, the Endowment has maintained a conservative approach to the utilization of leverage and illiquidity, which served NYU well during, and emerging from, the recent financial crisis.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer, the Director of Investments will be a senior member of the NYU Investment Office team. He/she will be expected to contribute thought leadership and insight to the work of the office. They must be able to form and defend well reasoned opinions culminating in strong recommendations.

The Director will contribute to the development of investment strategy, risk management frameworks and analytics based on an understanding of the underlying exposures of the portfolio. The Director will be responsible for conducting rigorous due diligence, including: sourcing ideas, evaluating and monitoring investment managers, and fulfilling all related aspects of documentation. In addition, the Director will lead research and analysis on a wide variety of evolving topics and handle additional projects involving University assets such as pensions, charitable gifts, etc.

The Director must be seasoned and passionate about investing, have a sincere interest in the non-profit sector, and have an innate sense of responsibility with regard to representing the University.

In particular, this role requires:
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, preferably with initial training in a top-tier analyst program (strategy consulting, banking, or equivalent)
  • Experience making direct investments; experience selecting managers is desirable, but is not a pre-requisite
  • Demonstrated capacity for independent thought, intellectual honesty and decision making
  • Curiosity and keen attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving analytic abilities
  • An open mind and a healthy degree of skepticism
  • An aptitude for synthesis and the ability to think strategically as well as tactically
  • A strong understanding of capital markets and complex investment strategies; a working knowledge of derivatives markets would be ideal
  • A solid grasp of business fundamentals
  • A practical understanding of incentives, legal and accounting issues, ideally with experience negotiating documents
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to meet deadlines
  • Good sense and sound judgment
  • A strong moral compass and the highest ethical standards
  • Record of academic accomplishment, with an MBA or other advanced degree preferred
